Exercise Bike Resistance Types – Magnetic, Friction, and Motorized
Understand the different resistance types on exercise bikes. We explain magnetic, friction, and motorized systems to help you choose the best for your needs.
Type 1: Magnetic Resistance
The most common type. Smooth, quiet, and reliable with no moving parts to wear out. Can be manually or electronically controlled.
Type 2: Direct-Contact Friction Resistance
Found on many spin bikes. A felt or leather brake pad is pressed against the flywheel using a tension knob and screw mechanism. Provides high resistance but requires pad replacement over time.
Type 3: Motorized Resistance
This refers to the electronic control of a magnetic resistance system, where a servo motor moves the magnets based on console commands.
Type 4: Air Resistance
Found on "air bikes" or "assault bikes." The resistance is created by a fan, and it increases the harder you pedal. Great for HIIT workouts.
