Treadmill Overcurrent Protection Tripping – Motor and Board Causes

Learn why your treadmill's overcurrent protection (tripping breaker or E3 error) is activating. It's a crucial safety warning about motor overload or board failure.

What is Overcurrent Protection?

This is a safety feature built into the motor controller (MCB) and your home's circuit breaker. It detects when the motor is drawing too much electrical current and shuts down power to prevent damage and fire.

Cause #1: Mechanical Overload

The most frequent cause is high friction from a dry, worn, or overtightened belt, which forces the motor to work too hard.

Cause #2: Electrical Short Circuit

A failure in the motor windings or on the motor control board can cause a short circuit, leading to a massive and instant current draw that trips the protection immediately.

Why You Shouldn't Ignore It

Continuously resetting a tripping breaker is dangerous. It's a clear sign that a component is failing and needs to be diagnosed and repaired by a professional.
