Treadmill Armature Failure – Short Circuits and Burnt Windings

A dead motor with a burning smell could be armature failure. Learn about short circuits and burnt windings in your treadmill motor.

The Armature: The Heart of the DC Motor

An explanation of the armature (the rotating part of the motor with copper windings) and its function.

Causes of Armature Failure

Chronic overheating, sustained overload (from a dry belt), or age can cause the insulation on the copper windings to fail, leading to a short circuit.

Symptoms of a Burnt or Shorted Armature

The most common symptom is a motor that is completely dead and will trip the circuit breaker instantly. It is often accompanied by a strong electrical burning smell.

Why Armature Failure Requires Motor Replacement

Rewinding a treadmill motor armature is not economically feasible. When the armature fails, the entire motor must be replaced.
