Treadmill Belt Slipping Under Load – Tension and Roller Causes
A treadmill belt that only slips when you're on it points to tension or roller problems. Learn to diagnose and fix slipping under load with our expert guide.
Diagnosing Slipping "Under Load"
Explaining how this specific symptom differs from a belt that is always slipping. It indicates a borderline tension or grip issue that only manifests under stress.
Cause 1: Insufficient Belt Tension
The most common cause. The belt is just loose enough that the friction from your feet causes it to stop, even though the front roller is still trying to pull it.
Cause 2: Worn Drive Roller
The front (drive) roller may have a worn surface ("crowning") that can no longer effectively grip the underside of the running belt.
Cause 3: Glazed Running Belt
The underside of the running belt can become smooth and "glazed" over time, reducing its coefficient of friction. Even with proper tension, it can't grip the drive roller.
